In Canada it is a crime to import, possess, produce, and traffic drugs classified as having a potential for abuse (such as marihuana. cocaine, heroin, and amphetamines). Possession for the purpose of trafficking, trafficking, production and importing carry very severe sentences even for a first time offender. The Courts take the position that drugs cause lives to be ruined and fuel other crimes. Those convicted of anything other than minor possession are looked upon as being the cause of many of the evils in society. There are, in the legal community proponents of legalizing some drugs. To date the Controlled drugs and Substances Act has not been amended to decriminalize and drugs. Depending on the drug an offender may face anything from a withdrawal of the charges to double-digit imprisonment.
